The Power of Smiling

Have you ever had someone smile at you out of nowhere? I bet you smiled back, didn't you? 

I remember one day, I was on my way to work-feeling really rushed and out of place, and suddenly this woman looked at me and gave me the biggest, most genuine smile. I automatically smiled back and felt a little calmer, a little more uplifted.

I kept walking towards work and that smile was still drawn on my face. It was incredible to see what a simple smile could do to my mood-so I decided to pass it on! I smiled at someone and they smiled back-how beautiful is this?

The benefits of smiling can really go a long way and positively impact not only ourselves, but also others.

  • Smiling Relieves Stress

Stress does not only affect our mental wellbeing, but it can also show in our faces. A single smile spurs a chemical reaction in our brains, releasing certain hormones-such as dopamine, which automatically make us feel happier!

What's really impressive is that smiling can reduce stress even if you are not genuinely smiling. So next time, try this one out: When you feel stressed, or overwhelmed, take some time to put a smile on your face. There will be heaps of benefits for you and those around you. 


  • Smiling elevates our mood 

Here is a little activity for you: Next time you are feeling low, try to smile. If you want to go the extra mile, start laughing loudly and for an extended period of time. What you will notice is that your mood will automatically become a little better. I have tried this one out and it did really work. Oh! If you are feeling fancy, add a little dance as well! 


  • Smiling is contagious 

It goes without saying that if we see people smile, we smile too! Our brains automatically notice and interpret other people's expressions. What this means is that even if we don't realize we are doing it, we mimic what they are doing and we smile too-yay!


  • Smiling makes us look more attractive and competent

Studies have shown that when we smile, we appear more likable, confident and competent to others. You can also help the person you are smiling feel more relaxed. 

If you think about it, you are more likely to approach someone that is smiling at you-as long as they are not creepily doing so.
